Howdy Hayfever

by Haylee Landford

I was raised in a great span of land on a country town in Texas. In our backyard, the playground was meadows of bluebonnets, grass, and of course, ragweed. I quickly discovered in my childhood by severe allergic reaction to my home of Texas.

My brother and sister would play outside with the neighbor kids for hours, while I was inside nursing my swelling eyes, runny nose, and sneezing fits. Hot days at school, I couldn't sit by an open window. I felt plagued by a deathly illness every Spring that was sure to claim my life, only to find it repeatedly diagnosed as seasonal allergies.

I'm sure I am not alone in my desire to completely enjoy the splendor of Spring from the fresh air outside, and not from inside a window next to a humidifier. I also have pledged my life to find a solution for clear sinuses throughout the year. I will not miss another night's sleep due to pressure in my nose and forehead, or overly clogged airways.

Here's what I have tried. Perhaps you, like me, have ventured far too many times to the doctor and pharmacist to waste thousands of dollars on allergy relieving agents. Of course, medicine's are always an easy solution to 24 hour allergy relief.

We need not assume that a prescription medication is required to relieve allergy symptoms. When a drug becomes over-the-counter, that simply means that they have paid off their debts for production and can now be sold in mass numbers for a lower price. These products are very useful in alleviating sinus problems. But is it enough?

For me, no, I need more than just one pill. The stronger the pill the more serious the side effects, and I can survive without constant drowsiness and dry cotton mouth. Other additions can be put with the medication to provide a more natural defense against the histamines.

One such product is an air purifier. They range from being quite affordable to very expensive, depending on which you prefer. I invested in a Honeywell system that is adequate for the square footage of my apartment, for the same price I would have used in nasal sprays for a year. Immediately I felt a change in the air I was breathing, especially at night, just by having this machine on.

Humidifiers are an excellent source of nasal moistening. Almost all doctors would recommend this, especially for smaller children. Some nasal sprays need to be used cautiously. They will eventually rob your nose of natural moisture, causing a dependence on them. If you feel the need to, try first a simple saline solution nasal spray.

A better idea exists to completely irrigate your sinus cavity, and that is the SinuCleanse. Doctors have worked to create a masterful solution to natural decongesting. This now stands alone as the only method of nasal decongestant that I use.

It is a teapot design that I fill with lukewarm water and saline solution mix morning and night. The process is putting the spout in one nostril and tilting you head so as to let the saline solution completely flow threw your passages and out the other side and repeat for both nostrils. The results will amaze you.

Even when I think my nose is as clean from mucus and snot as it can get, after I use the SinuCleanse, the dam is broken inside my nose releasing all the sinus pressure. I drip my nose clean for the next few minutes and I can breath like I've never breathed before. I truly feel a rebirth inside my nose from this device and feel it would adequately suit any person with any nasal issues at all.

Wherever we live, the beautiful land surrounding us doesn't need to be our enemy. Whether you live in Arizona, Texas, Oregon, or Siam, there is a solution to the allergies around you. Texas especially is abundant with vast acreage and property full of allergens trying to ruin our fun. Enjoy all the plants in your backyard without having it interrupted by one single sneeze.
