Air conditioners and refrigerators work on the same principles as a dehumidifier. The humid air is drawn over a series of cold coils which works to extract a good deal of the moisture from it via condensation. As the condensation builds, it will drip off into a collection bucket found inside the dehumidifier. This process slightly elevates the temperature of the air after the moisture is extracted from it and it is then blown back into the room.

Furnace Air Filter Maintenance

Whenever you use your heater or your central air conditioning, the air in your home is being circulated through the furnace and the installed air filter. The furnace air filter holds onto possibly harmful particles like dust and allergens as air passes through, before pushing it into your home. The filter can not effectively clean the air if it gets too full. If this happens you will notice a dramatic drop in air quality in your home. Changing your air filter every one to three months will help keep a high air quality and even lower your electric bill.

How often you need to replace your furnace air filter is determined by a varying number of factors. If you run your air conditioning or heater daily, then more air is passing through the filter than if run it only on days that are very hot or very cold. The time of year will also have an effect on how frequently the air filter needs to be changed. The seasons of Spring and Autumn tend to be when pollen counts spike the most. This means there are more particles in the air that need to be filtered out. It also means that the filter will become clogged even more quickly than during the other times of the year. The filters you choose to use will also affect how often you need to change the filter. Some filters may be labeled as working for three months, but you should check them every once in a while to make sure.

There are many varying types of filters. Your user's manual should have recommendations on which kind of furnace air filter to buy. The majority of filters are disposable, they are simply thrown in the trash when they become too full to clean the air. There are reusable filters becoming more widely available. Reusable filters reduce landfill waste and can save the consumer money over time as new filters do not need to be purchased each month. The draw back is that the reusable filter needs to be cleaned about as often as a disposable filter needs to be changed. Cleaning a reusable filter usually means just rinsing it off with a hose. For people with allergies, cleaning the filter can be much of a problem as all some of the allergens that were trapped in the filter may be released back into the air of your house.

The more dirty a filter becomes, the harder the heater or air conditioner has to strain itself to properly circulate the air. This can lead to higher electric bills. Regular replacement of your furnace air filter is an easy, and cheap way of keeping your electric bills under control. The improvement in air quality in our home is another desirable result of regular filter maintenance.

Whether you want to use disposable filter or reusable filter, it will come down to your personal preference and furnace conditions.

Regular care of your air filtration system is something everyone needs to do in order to dust and allergen-free. Find a furnace air filter in order to breathe easy.

How to Stop Driving Your Husband Crazy with a Wall Mount air Conditioner

My allergies were driving me crazy. The never ending sneezing was driving my husband insane. A friend suggested getting a wall mount air conditioner, he said that would solve my allergy problems.

He was absolutely right, and I am so glad!

So what's the big deal about a wall mount air conditioner? To start, they are smaller than the average air conditioning unit, they are much quieter, they help to keep pollen and other pollutants out of the home, and better yet, they use less energy than their conventional counterparts.

Some wonder just what the wall mount air conditioners look like. It's really simple. The inside units are about 8 inches by 12 inches by about 4 feet and hang about as high as the top of a picture. They really blend in well to any decor. The outside unit is similar to the outside unit for a central air conditioning system but a little bit smaller. Our home is a standard ranch style house so we have two larger split units and a smaller one for a small bedroom.

Some people get concerned about installation. Let me assure you the installation is really simple. It's just a matter of drilling a three inch hole in the wall, installing the inside unit on the wall with a few screws. Then put the outside unit on a cement pad. After that, connect them together and hook up the power. Oh yes, one final thing the battery needs to be installed in the programmable remote. Then you're up and running, it's genius!

What we did in our application was to use two outside units and three inside units. The outside units are simply heat pumps that pull the cool out of the summer air and bring it in the house, and in the winter extract the warmth from the outside air and bring it inside. Typical heat pump technology.

What a difference these air conditioners made! I noticed an improvement in my allergies within just a couple of days, (making my husband very happy.) I also noticed that there was less dust in my home, an added benefit since I dislike dusting. The wall units made very little operating noise, definitely much quieter than a window unit.

As I mentioned before, a wonderful feature of the wall mount air conditioners is that they are also heat pumps. Now days with the price of fossil fuels for heating our homes, it's nice to have another option. It's a clean, effortless way to provide zone heat in our home, and very comfortable. Not to mention that there is no cutting wood, or hauling in pellets as with some other heating sources!

Check out, too, that the federal government is giving a $1500 tax credit if you buy and install a new wall mount air conditioner system. Of course, you'll want to check if the model you're considering is one of the qualifying units. Your salesperson will be able to help you there.

So am I happy that we spent the money on our new wall mount air conditioner? You bet I am. I can breathe easily, I rarely sneeze anymore, our fuel bills are lower since we are using less propane and wood pellets, and we are going "green" to help the environment. You can even get a tax credit. So what's not to like?

Spore Mold: The Smell Of Mold, How To Recognize And Eradicate It

by Mike Holder

There are six basic issues to know when it comes to mold or mildew smells. First, if you detect the musty smell in your house (which most recognize as mold or mildew, even though mildew occurs most typically on living plants not inside a home), you most assuredly will find mold somewhere in the building. Second, there are some molds which give off no smells at all so never rely on smell alone to tell you whether or not mold exists in your home. Third, even though it has been deliberated whether the gases (or smell) released by mold is dangerous we do know that the presence of these gases (smells) do signify a problem exists. Forth, should there be mold in your home (odorless or otherwise) you must detect it, eradicate it and fix whatever caused it. Fifth, you may use self inspection kits as part of your routine home maintenance process, however you should make sure you do periodically have professional inspections done as well (which are somewhat more expensive than the DIY types of inspections). Sixth, once you have gotten rid of your mold problems you may not have necessarily gotten rid of the mold smell. As with many gases (odors) the musty smell of mold may have seeped into various materials surrounding it--most notably curtains and carpets and such.

Remember that there are many types of molds which may cause the odors to vary as well. The circumstances (how damp, how hot, how much light, what it is growing on etc.) causing the mold to develop will play a part in how (or if) the mold smells. Not only do the various types of mold differ odor-wise, they will vary visually as well (most typically color variances although some are hard to see at all).

When mold is found most likely whatever problem causing the mold has caused other hazards which may be giving off their own odors in addition to the smells produced by the mold--sometimes masking the smell of mold. A few examples could be the rotting corpse of a dead animal, sewage leaks, dangerous pesticides leaking, and deadly gases leaking from AC or Heating units (etc.).

Remember the smell produced by mold in no way tells us how big the problem is or whether the problem is poisonous.

It is not always possible but can be very helpful to know a buildings history when trying to ascertain where a problem may lie. For example if you know there was a plumbing leak you may want to begin the inspection there.

When it comes to odor sensitivity everyone is different. Chances are that one person may become aware of an odor much more rapidly than others.

Odor perception can also be affected by the types of medications you may be taking or by an illness you may be suffering from. Some illnesses/medications can prevent one from detecting smells or perhaps have one imagining odors.

The Basics About Air Purifiers

by Kimberly Stallings

One thing that many people do not realize is that the air outside is much cleaner than house hold air. You can keep the air inside cleaner by leaving the windows open, getting a high efficient air conditioning filter, or you can look into buying an air purifier.

I am sure that you have seen these advertised before, whether it be walking around a shopping mall, or on the internet. But there are a handful of people that are not sure if it is worth the money to invest in one.

The truth is that air purifiers can be expensive to purchase, but you need to remember one thing. They result in clean air, which is easier to breathe. Now how can you go and put a price on something like that?

Now if you are sold on that fact that they make your home air cleaner, you need to do some more research on what kind of air purifier you should get. You must remember there are certain types designed for certain tasks of purifying the air.

First thing you might want to look into when buying an air purifier, is how much, if at all, the maintenance of it is going to cost you. This is because some air purifiers are designed to have a filter changed every couple months to a year, and filters can become expensive.

Know the price of the filter, and how long it will last before it needs replacement is a must when choosing an air purifier that uses filters. The ones that use collection grids instead of filters may cost more initially, but they are cheaper down the road as you are not paying for replacement filters.

It is also important to look over what you will be using your air purifier for. A big number of persons use air purifiers if they have pets or if they have a smoker inside the house. With that being said, not all air purifiers are made to get rid of these types of particles from the air.

Because not many models are made to get rid of the smell of cigarette smoke, it is very important that you read exactly what it is the air purifier is designed to do, or you could be making a costly mistake.
