Solutions In Combating A Gluten Food Allergy

by Chris Channing

A common food allergy found among children and adults alike is one that demands that a consumer avoid any consumption of gluten. Gluten is a common protein that is found in a wide variety of foods, making it hard to avoid the protein altogether. Armed with the right knowledge will enable a consumer to still lead a healthy nutrition.

Gluten is a protein that is found in different types of grain. Grains such as barley or wheat will carry the protein, meaning most types of bread and fast food products aren't able to be consumed. Fast food chains today have gotten better at offering a diet to those with food allergies. Even still, it is easily noticed that the bulk of the menu in places such as Wendy's is catered to those who are able to consume gluten without any immediate trouble.

Gluten-free products are available that mimic the same taste and consistency of products gluten is commonly found in. These substitute versions of breads and wheat products are generally more expensive. On average, they also tend to be less healthy if the gluten is being substituted with a higher fat content. Planning a healthy diet is harder to do with substitute products, but still managed.

Beer drinkers will have to call it quits when coming to the realization that they may have an intolerance to gluten. Popular types of alcohol products are made from wheat, barley, and other assorted grains. Obviously this is going to not phase well with those allergic to gluten, or those trying to avoid it completely. There are special types of brews that substitute the grains for gluten-free materials, although the result is a bit more expensive.

The biggest alternative used to gluten-based foods is to buy food comprised of corn as compared to other grains that can cause a reaction. Corn is safe to consume for those with a gluten allergy, and is relatively cheap to harvest and process into food. In some cases, corn is even the preferred grain of choice: such as the case with cereal brands. Do keep in mind that presence of corn doesn't mean other grains containing gluten won't be present.

One must be very careful when switching from one food brand to another. While one brand of breakfast grits may be gluten free, it's very common to see grits that aren't. This principle applies to a wide number of food products, demanding that the consumer always look before they buy a food product.
